Akademi Perikanan Malaysia (APM) is a training institution under the Department of Fisheries Malaysia. Its history began with the establishment of the Marine Fisheries School in Gelugor, Penang, in 1952. The institution was later relocated and upgraded to Akademi Perikanan Malaysia in Chendering, Terengganu, where it operates fully to train skilled manpower for the national fisheries sector.

APM is located in Chendering, Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu. Its strategic location near the South China Sea makes it ideal for nautical and capture fisheries training. The academy is approximately 10 kilometres from Kuala Terengganu city centre.

APM was established with the vision of becoming a centre of excellence in fisheries human capital development. Its main objectives include:
Producing skilled and semi-skilled manpower competent in the sub-sectors of capture fisheries, aquaculture and agro-based industries.
Providing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes that meet current industry needs.
Developing trainees with strong discipline, ethics and competitiveness.
Enhancing the socio-economic status of fishing communities through knowledge and technology transfer.

The Malaysia Fisheries Academy (APM) is a training institution under the Department of Fisheries Malaysia, which operates under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM). It provides skills-based and technical training in the field of capture fisheries and related industries.
APM is also:
- A Higher Education Provider (HEP) under the Department of Fisheries Malaysia, accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).
- An Accredited Centre (AC) under the Agricultural Capacity Development and Training Division (BPKLP), KPKM, recognised by the Department of Skills Development (JPK).
- A Public Training Institute (PTI) recognised by the Public Service Department (PSD).
APM’s primary role is to produce a skilled, knowledgeable, and competitive workforce to meet the needs of the national fisheries industry.
APM offers the following programmes:
- Upskilling courses in the fields of capture fisheries, nautical studies, marine engineering, and fisheries product processing.
- Long-Term Training Programmes, including:
- Fisheries Certificate
- Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM)
Yes. The upskilling courses conducted at APM are recognised by the Department of Fisheries Malaysia, while the Fisheries Certificate programme is recognised by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), and the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) programme is recognised by the Department of Skills Development (JPK).
Upskilling courses are short-term courses designed to enhance the skills, competencies, and knowledge of the workforce in the fisheries and marine sectors.
These courses are offered to:
- Staff of the Department of Fisheries Malaysia
- Fishermen and fisheries communities
- Entrepreneurs and operators in the fisheries industry
The courses offered include:
- Introduction to Fishing Gear Course
- Traditional Fishing Gear Course
- Commercial Fishing Gear Course
- Navigation Technology and Maritime Safety Course
- Fisheries Product Processing Technology Course
- Basic Outboard Engine Maintenance Course
- Basic Marine Engine Maintenance Course

The course duration is flexible, typically ranging from 1 day to 1 week, depending on the module.
Yes. Participants will receive a certificate of participation upon completion of the course.
No. The course is fully sponsored by the Government of Malaysia.

The duration of study for the Fisheries Certificate and Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) is 2 years, including industrial training.
Malaysian citizens who meet the specified age, academic, and health requirements are eligible to apply.

This tagline is used for long-term training at all Accredited Centres (AC) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM). Students at all these ACs are exempt from any tuition fees, receive a monthly living allowance, and are provided with free accommodation and meals throughout their stay at the AC.
APM is equipped with comprehensive training infrastructure, including lecture halls, classrooms, student hostels, dining halls, resource centres, prayer rooms, and sports facilities. For technical training purposes, APM is also equipped with a training vessel, engineering workshops, fisheries product processing workshops, equipment workshops, chart rooms, communication towers, and a swimming pool.
Yes. All students will undergo industrial training as part of the programme requirements.
APM graduates can pursue careers in various fields, including:

e. Fisheries industry entrepreneurship
Bahasa Malaysia is the primary language of instruction for teaching and practical training. However, English technical terminology—particularly in the fields of nautical studies and engineering—is widely used in accordance with international standards.
