History of APM

1952
Establishment of Marine Fisheries School (Gelugor, Penang)
The Government's efforts in providing training to fishermen in this country began with the establishment of a Marine Fisheries School in Gelugor, Penang in 1952.
1963
Establishment of the Seberang Takir Sea Fisheries School (Kuala Terengganu)
This was followed by the establishment of another Marine Fisheries School, in Seberang Takir, Kuala Terengganu in 1963 specifically to cater for the training needs of fishermen from the East Coast states of the Peninsular. Recognizing the current needs and looking at the rapid progress in the Fisheries Industry, as a positive effort towards further developing the country's fisheries industry, an institute known as the Malaysian Fisheries Training Institute (ILPM) was subsequently established with the assistance and cooperation of the United Nations through the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
1969
Establishment of ILPM in Batu Maung, Penang
Started on 5 November 1969 and located in Batu Maung, Penang, it became fully operational in early 1972.
1992
ILPM Relocation to New Complex in Chendering, Kuala Terengganu
In June 1992, ILPM moved to its new complex in Chendering, Kuala Terengganu from Penang. The new complex, which has more modern equipment and training facilities, was built at a cost of approximately RM18 million with assistance from the Japanese Government under the JICA Programme.
1999
ILPM Name Change to Malaysian Fisheries Institute
This new complex not only offers various courses and training to fishermen, farmers and fisheries industry entrepreneurs but also plays a role in providing training to the staff of the Malaysian Fisheries Department. In early 1999, ILPM was renamed the Malaysian Fisheries Institute to reflect its active role in developing and accelerating the development of the country's fisheries industry.
2014
Rebranding to the Malaysian Fisheries Academy (APM)
The Malaysian Fisheries Institute was rebranded as the Malaysian Fisheries Academy in April 2014.
